Case Study – MTFI Transformation

The Task

This project involved the complete upgrade of a Motor Transport Fuel Installation (MTFI) for a Defence client of ours. The LCM team ensured a smooth and efficient process, minimising disruption to their business operations.

Scope of Work

  • Upgrading existing MTFI facilities to meet current regulations and client specifications.
  • Demolition and removal of redundant tanks & equipment and infrastructure.
  • New concrete bays and pump island formed.
  • Installation of new fuel tanks, control kiosk, dispensers, and associated pipework.
  • Electrical rewiring and installation of a new fire alarm system.
  • Earthing and lightning protection systems implemented.
  • Commissioning of new fuel management and gauging systems.
  • Operator training and handover of operation and maintenance manuals.

Our Approach:

Our client trusted our expertise to deliver a high-quality MTFI upgrade. We followed a meticulous approach, ensuring every step was completed safely and efficiently. A breakdown of the key stages, as follow:

1. Detailed Planning & Inductions:

  • A comprehensive project plan outlining each stage and ensuring a smooth workflow was established.
  • RAMS produced and approved by authorised personnel.
  • Toolbox talks and safety briefings were conducted to guarantee a safe working environment for all personnel.

2. Safe Demolition & Site Preparation:

  • The existing MTFI was decommissioned safely, with electrical isolation and fuel line drainage procedures strictly followed.
  • A designated work area was secured using robust Heras fencing and clear safety signage.

3. New MTFI Installation:

  • New aboveground fuel tanks were positioned and installed as per design.
  • A brand-new fuel island was constructed, including pump stands, electrical ducting, and double-contained fuel lines.
  • A modern GRP kiosk was erected and equipped with a fire alarm system equipment for enhanced safety.

4. Electrical & Utility Upgrades:

  • A new electrical cable was installed from the main feeder pillar to the new kiosk, ensuring the MTFI was compliant to the latest regulations.
  • Earthing and lightning protection systems were implemented for complete safety.
  • New lamp posts, bollards, and signage improved the functionality and aesthetics of the facility.

5. Commissioning & Training:

  • All pipework underwent rigorous testing to guarantee a leak-free system.
  • We had a team in place to oversee the fuel management and gauging systems commissioning.
  • The MOD base staff received comprehensive training on operating and maintaining the new MTFI. We handed over the keys to a happy client – all within the timeframe initially given.

Outcomes:

The MOD base benefited from a fully functional and licensed MTFI, ensuring compliance with regulations and improved operational efficiency. The project was delivered within the agreed timeframe and budget, minimising disruption to their business activities.

We are proud of our successful collaboration with the Defence sector. This project demonstrates LCM’s expertise in MTFI upgrades and our commitment to delivering exceptional client service.
