Start Point Lighthouse stands atop one of the most exposed peninsulas in the United Kingdom. It stands over 60m above the waves that crash on the reefs and rock ledges that lie unhidden beneath Start Point and extend about a mile out into the English Channel. The light has a range of 25 nautical miles and flashes 3 times every 10 seconds. It marks the gateway to the West Country and the big wide Atlantic beyond if sailing from East to West along the English Channel. If sailing from the south it is the first light that one sees as one approaches England.
Now automated and managed from the Trinity House Operations Centre in Harwich, England, Start Point is a frequent friend to many of our staff. We love going there. Its proximity to the sea, its battlemented parapet and the mystery that surrounds an isolated tower that has stood true against storms, fires, war and change since 1836.
This time we were there to install new pipework to a heating oil tank. This time we chose double skin copper pipework and also lagged the pipework with Denso Tape to protect it further from the elements.
Not a massive job but one that will help to ensure this essential aid to navigation continues its honourable service.
If you need any work done on fuel tanks let LCM know. We have been doing this for 30 years!
