FM Case Study – Oil Tank Replacement
The Task
A Scottish facility management customer tasked LCM with the completion of a gas-free cleaning and decommissioning of 4 x 15,000L oil tanks. They were subsequently replaced with 2 x new 12,000 L oil storages. (Waste and clean transformer oil).
The installation of a 22m x 1m concrete slope, drainage modifications and pipework alterations were to be completed by the end of the project.
Scope of Work
The LCM team arrived on site on a rainy Monday to set up the site perimeter with barriers, signs, and cones to ensure a safe working environment. The risk assessments and method statements for the job were all debriefed by the team leaders and toolbox talks were had to outline the job specifics and identify any potential challenges. Work commenced once all paperwork was signed and the spill kits were in place.
A scaffolding was erected, and our electricians disconnected the 4 in-situ 15,000L tanks. Once it was safe to do so, the confined space and rescue team entered the tank storages, and one by one cleaned them out to a gas-free standard. The fuel tanks were ready to be removed and recycled at a nearby recycling centre. All other waste from washings and fuel remnants were discarded at an EA-licenced facility near the client’s site.
The Outcome
The team carefully navigated their correct placement upon delivery of the 2 new 12,000L tanks. The new tank storages were internally bunded, fully equipped with an end cabinet and a full-length roller door. One for clean oil, and one for waste oil, the vessels were installed and electrically connected, with pipework being crafted to suit the site’s operational requirements.
An additional concrete ramp was installed, 22m x 1m, to prevent the site from flooding by rainwater and assist drainage.
A 4-week project, the LCM team finished ahead of schedule and left a pleased client with a beautiful installation and a fully functional & compliant fuel environment. Further works are planned on the client’s other sites to commence this calendar year on the back of our team’s fantastic work.
