Project File: Water Pit Re-coating

The Task

This project involved the complete re-coating of a water test pit and measuring approximately 32 square meters. The existing coating in the tank showed signs of deterioration – chipping and peeling, which compromised the tank integrity – and prompted the client to reach out to us.

The Process

Koso Kent Introl Limited, a manufacturer of valves
and components, conducts rigorous pressure
testing under water to ensure product integrity.

However, the concrete test pit used for these
tests was showing signs of wear and tear, with
the existing coating chipping and peeling.

To address this issue, Koso contacted LCM for a
coating solution. After assessing the pit and
potential damage from the components, we
recommended a more durable lining system
incorporating glass fiber matting.

Recognising the benefits of this approach, Koso decided to proceed with the LCM/Sprayglass SJ01 system.

The Water Pit was received in a clean and dry condition, free from contamination. To prepare the surface for coating, we employed a combination of manual and mechanical methods to create a suitable key.

Dust and debris generated during the cleaning process were thoroughly swept and vacuumed. After priming, a base coat of resin and filler was applied to a nominal dry film thickness (DFT) of 1.5 mm.

While the base coat was still wet, we embedded a layer of 600 gsm chopped strand mat and wetted it out with resin using a paddle roller to ensure complete saturation and the removal of any trapped air.

A surfacing tissue was then laid over the mat and wetted out with resin. After curing, the surface was smoothed by rubbing down any high spots.

Outcomes:

LCM’s proactive solution delivered a significantly enhanced and durable lining for Koso Kent Introl’s water test pit.

The application of a glass fiber reinforced system, following careful preparation, effectively resolved the previous coating failures. The embedded chopped strand matting has visibly increased the pit’s structural resilience against testing stresses, while the smooth, fully wetted-out finish ensures long-term reliability.

This successful re-coating will support the continued accuracy and efficiency of Koso’s pressure testing, minimising future maintenance needs.
