MTFI Transformation
The Task
LCM was appointed to deliver a complete upgrade of a Motor Transport Fuel Installation (MTFI) for a Defence client. The existing facility required modernisation to meet current regulations and operational requirements, while minimising disruption to ongoing base activity.
The objective was to decommission outdated infrastructure and deliver a fully compliant, future-ready fuel installation with upgraded tanks, dispensing equipment and control systems.
Scope of Works:
Following detailed planning and approved RAMS, LCM mobilised to site and established a secure working compound with Heras fencing and safety signage.
Toolbox talks and inductions were carried out prior to works commencing. The existing MTFI was safely decommissioned, including electrical isolation and controlled drainage of fuel lines, before demolition and removal of redundant tanks, equipment and infrastructure.
With the site prepared, new concrete bays and a pump island were formed to accommodate the upgraded installation.
New aboveground fuel tanks were positioned in line with design specifications, alongside installation of new dispensers, double-contained fuel lines and associated pipework. A modern GRP control kiosk was erected and fitted with fire alarm systems and upgraded control equipment.
Electrical rewiring was completed from the main feeder pillar to the new kiosk, ensuring compliance with current standards. Earthing and lightning protection systems were implemented, and new lamp posts, bollards and signage installed to improve both safety and usability. All pipework was pressure tested, fuel management and gauging systems were commissioned, and base personnel received full operator training alongside handover of operation and maintenance manuals.
Outcomes
The Defence site was left with a fully functional, licensed and regulation-compliant MTFI designed to improve operational efficiency and long-term resilience.
The project was delivered within the agreed timeframe and budget, with minimal disruption to base operations. The successful transformation demonstrates LCM’s capability in managing complex fuel infrastructure upgrades within secure Defence environments.
