Road Acid Tanker Barrel Lining

Road Acid Tanker Barrel Lining

The Task

LCM was appointed to restore the internal lining of a road tanker acid barrel back to specification. The objective was to prepare and protect the internal steel surfaces with a high-performance lining system capable of withstanding aggressive chemical service.

The tanker arrived at LCM’s Kellington workshop washed out, drained and dried, with all pipework and fittings removed and ready for surface preparation.

Scope of Works:

On receipt, all external areas and components not requiring treatment were masked to protect surrounding structure and fittings.

Internal surfaces were then grit blasted to Swedish Standard SA2.5, achieving a minimum surface profile of 75 microns to ensure optimal coating adhesion. All blast media and debris were fully removed and responsibly disposed of prior to coating application.

A compatible multi-layer coating system from the same generic family was specified to ensure strong inter-coat adhesion and long-term durability.

Sprayglass LP Primer was applied at a dry film thickness of 20 to 25 microns to provide a stable holding and prefabrication base. This was followed by multiple coats of Sprayglass SG-459, a glass flake reinforced Novolac Epoxy Vinyl Ester lining system, applied to achieve a nominal dry film thickness of 1.75 mm, with a minimum of 1.5 mm across the barrel.

The coating system was completed with Sprayglass Topcoat applied at 200 to 250 microns dry film thickness to accelerate cure and enhance chemical resistance. Additional reinforcement was applied to welds, sharp edges, nozzle connections and flange faces. Coloured layers were used to confirm full coverage, with ongoing thickness monitoring throughout. Final verification included full dry film thickness checks and spark testing to confirm lining integrity.

Outcomes

The completed works delivered a chemically resistant, structurally reinforced internal lining suitable for demanding acid service conditions. Surface preparation and coating application were carried out in line with recognised industry standards, resulting in a durable and compliant finish.

The tanker was returned to service with restored protection, extended operational life and confidence in long-term performance within a high-risk operating environment.
