CompEx Electrical

CompEx Electrical is LCM Environmental’s specialist electrical service for sites where explosive atmospheres or hazardous areas are a credible risk.

Overview

The service supports controlled electrical works and inspections in environments where ignition source management, procedural discipline, and clear documentation are essential.

Delivery is undertaken by CompEx-certified electrical personnel, with competency aligned to the specific activities being carried out.

Depending on the agreed scope and CompEx modules held, CompEx Electrical can support inspection, testing, installation, maintenance, and defined remedial works on electrical systems and Ex-rated equipment. This may include work on hazardous-area equipment itself, as well as associated electrical interfaces where systems serve or enter zoned areas.

The service is typically used in higher-risk or higher-consequence environments, where electrical defects can have safety, operational, or regulatory implications. LCM provides UK-wide coverage, with works planned around permits, access controls, and operational constraints such as shutdown windows.

Impact

Electrical work in hazardous or potentially explosive environments carries a different risk profile to general electrical activity.

Where explosive atmospheres may be present, issues such as poor installation, equipment degradation, or undocumented modifications can increase ignition risk, create compliance uncertainty, and undermine confidence during audits or inspections.

CompEx Electrical is intended to help organisations:

• Demonstrate that electrical works are undertaken by appropriately competent personnel.
• Maintain control over ignition sources within hazardous or zoned areas.
• Produce traceable evidence of inspection, maintenance, and defect close-out where required.
• Reduce the likelihood of unplanned disruption linked to electrical non-compliance or failure.

In many cases, the value of the service extends beyond the physical work completed. Clear documentation, defined scope boundaries, and disciplined execution can provide assurance to Estates, Operations, and HSE teams responsible for safety, uptime, and audit readiness.

Involvement

The exact activities and outputs depend on the agreed scope and site context. A typical engagement may include some or all of the following stages.

Scoping and site intake

Initial clarification of the task, including hazardous area classification, asset types, access restrictions, permit-to-work requirements, and operational constraints such as shutdown windows.

Competency alignment

Confirmation that the CompEx modules and authorisations held by the delivery team align with the activities being undertaken, for example inspection, installation, or maintenance.

On-site electrical works or inspection

Completion of the agreed electrical activities, which may include inspection and testing, installation works, maintenance tasks, or defined remedial actions. Hazardous-area controls are applied where relevant.

Defect identification and reporting

Recording of non-conformities or defects within the agreed scope, with findings prioritised to support informed decision-making.

Remedial works and close-out

Where included, completion of agreed remedial works and provision of handback information showing what was addressed and where.

Compliance, Standards & Governance

COMPEX Electrical operates within established UK and international frameworks governing electrical safety and hazardous-area work.

Depending on the scope of works, this service may reference or support alignment with:

• DSEAR requirements where explosive atmospheres are present.
• Relevant parts of the IEC / BS EN 60079 series for explosive atmospheres.
• CompEx competency requirements for personnel undertaking hazardous-area electrical activities.

Where wider electrical systems are involved, additional standards or regulations may apply. Any compliance references are framed to reflect the agreed scope of works and do not replace the client’s statutory duties.

Typical Use Environments

COMPEX Electrical is currently positioned towards higher-risk or higher-consequence operational environments, often described as critical infrastructure.

Specific sectors, site types, or exclusions are confirmed during scoping. No environment list should be assumed until agreed with LCM’s technical leads.

Planned vs Reactive Use

Planned use

Planned inspection.

Planned maintenance.

Reactive use

Remedial works following identified defects or non-conformities.

What happens next?

From an initial discussion, the scope of works, competency requirements, documentation expectations, and delivery approach are confirmed before any activities are planned. This ensures the service aligns with operational realities and compliance expectations, without assumptions.
