Amendment 4 to the 18th Edition – Electrical Installations

Amendment 4 to the 18th Edition, the mandatory British Standard for electrical installations in the UK, takes effect on 15 April 2026. This latest update introduces new requirements around stationary secondary batteries, ICT earthing and bonding, Power over Ethernet, and a major revision to medical locations.

For organisations managing compliance across commercial and public estates, this is a practical review point. The update is likely to be particularly relevant for hospitals, data centres, government estates, custodial sites, ICT-heavy buildings, and sites with battery storage or renewable systems. Ahead of April 2026, duty holders should be asking whether current inspection and testing plans still align, whether newer systems are being assessed properly, and whether budgets and internal resource reflect what the changes will require.

If you manage electrical compliance across a commercial or public estate, now is the time to review inspection plans, budgets and resource before the update comes into force.
